My Learning Journey Shaping Talent Strategy

My career in learning and development is the result of more than 20 years in human resources, beginning with recruitment and progressing into my current role as a director of learning and development. Recruiting gave me early exposure to how skills, potential, and culture fit influenced both short-term success and long-term retention. It has taught me that hiring is only the first step—development is where talent truly comes to life.

As my career evolved, I found the most fulfillment in helping employees and leaders grow. Supporting over 1,000 employees today, I’ve learned that effective talent strategies must be both structured and personal. While organizations need consistent frameworks and scalable programs, individuals need learning that reflects their unique goals and career paths. My approach focuses on aligning individual development with organizational needs so learning feels purposeful, relevant, and motivating.

Upskilling and Retaining: Today’s Key Challenges

One of the biggest challenges organizations face is the speed at which skills are changing. Business needs evolve quickly, yet learning programs often struggle to keep pace. Our employees also expect flexibility, personalization, and clarity about how learning connects to their career development.

“Retention is tied to growth; without clear development paths, employees leave.”

Retention is tied to growth; when employees don’t see clear career development opportunities, they’re more likely to go elsewhere. We must find ways to deliver consistent learning at scale while still addressing individual aspirations. Creating visible career pathways and practical on-the-job learning experiences is essential to retaining top talent.

Aligning Learning with Business Performance Outcomes

Alignment starts with listening. I work closely with leaders to understand strategic priorities, performance gaps, and future capability needs. Learning initiatives and individual development are then designed to support those goals. Equally important is the impact beyond course completion. I focus on how learning changes behavior and improves performance over time.

Leadership Programs Preparing Organizations for Future Demands

Leadership development plays a critical role in organizational readiness. Leaders shape culture, influence engagement, and drive execution, especially during periods of change. Strong development programs help leaders build self-awareness, adaptability, and the ability to develop others.

Preparing leaders for future demands means going beyond technical skills. It requires strengthening communication, decisionmaking and resilience. When we empower our leaders to coach their teams, organizations are better positioned to navigate uncertainty and sustain growth.

Building a Career in Learning and Development

Great L&D professionals understand how learning connects to real challenges and outcomes. Invest time in building relationships with leaders and employees and listen closely to their needs. It is also important to remain adaptable.

The field is always changing, and successful professionals are willing to learn, experiment, and refine their approach. Remember, learning and development are fundamentally about people, and when you are genuinely invested in helping others grow, your work will have a lasting impact on individuals, organizations, and your own career.
