In an exclusive interview with Manage HR, Ms. Stupak shared her invaluable insights on people-first culture and purposedriven leadership.

Key Responsibilities in a Dynamic Role

As VP of Human Resources at Pet Valu, I oversee a team dedicated to fostering a people-first culture. My role encompasses strategic and operational responsibilities, with a focus on talent strategy, organizational design, employee enablement, and leadership development. In partnership with my peers on the executive team, I ensure our HR practices align with our business goals and reflect Pet Valu’s core values, also known as “Our Four Paws”— Safety, Compassion, Expertise, and Efficiency. My ultimate goal is to help every ACE (“animal care enthusiast”) employee, whether in stores, distribution centers, or corporate offices, feel supported and empowered.

“Fear should not prevent individuals from taking on new challenges, as these experiences often yield the most significant personal growth”

When assessing candidates for senior positions, we prioritize strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, and accountability. However, equally important are humility, compassion, and a commitment to serving pet lovers and their pets. We seek leaders who can deliver results while driving inclusive, high-performing teams. As a development-focused company, we nurture high-potential talent into top-tier employees. During our selection process, we assess candidates based on their accomplishments and leadership skills, particularly in moments of challenge or change. Striking the right balance between performance and purpose is what defines successful leadership at Pet Valu.

Community-Centered Listening Approach

Our approach to equity and inclusion is authentic and deeply integrated into Pet Valu’s operations. We don’t set metrics or targets to check a box; instead, we are intentional about what we stand for and how we present it, especially in our external materials and ACE-facing initiatives, such as our leadership development program. To achieve consistency across our network, we embed inclusive practices into our hiring, training, and leadership development processes. We strive to highlight the communities we serve by actively listening through feedback and community partnerships to understand the unique needs of each region. Our goal is to create a culture where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued, regardless of where they work or live.

One of the most impactful leadership lessons that I have learnt over the years is the importance of leading with curiosity and compassion. In HR, we often navigate complex and emotionally charged situations where deep listening and thoughtful responses can turn challenges into opportunities for growth. I have also learned that clarity is essential. Being transparent about expectations, decisions, and changes builds trust and resilience within teams. I lead with compassion and intention, whether supporting a team member or collaborating with fellow executives.

Key Advice for Aspiring HR Professionals

I encourage emerging HR professionals to stay curious and build strong relationships. Success in HR requires striking a balance between data and human connection while navigating policies with a deep understanding of people.

Seeking mentors, asking for feedback, and embracing stretch assignments will push professional growth. Fear should not prevent individuals from taking on new challenges, as these experiences often yield the most significant personal growth. Above all, I remind young professionals that our work has a real impact on people’s lives, and when we lead with purpose and authenticity, we lay the foundation for lasting career success.
